A Day In The Life Of A Small Business Owner May 24, 2019 00:00

It’s really hard to get things done when you work from home. It’s so easy to be distracted by silly things, like a game of catch with your dog or staying in bed a little longer than you should.

I’ve learnt I need to structure my day in a way that is flexible, but still productive, covering all the bases that need covering. I outsource a lot of work, but much of the business I take care of myself, as most small business owners do.

This is what a day in my life looks like.

06:00

I try to wake up at 6 in the morning, but in reality I usually snooze until around 06:30 and then go meditate or read something uplifting if I’m particularly anxious that day.

I catch up on my business social media posts and comments, and draw up a to-do list for the day.

07:30

I get straight back into bed with a cup of tea. The light in my room is so lovely in Winter, and it’s just perfect for reading a few chapters of my book.

08:00

I have breakfast and get ready for the day. I generally have very long days that stretch until 21:00 at night so it takes me a while to figure out the most logical way to dress for the day.

08:45

I take my beloved Coco for a walk, either around the neighbourhood, or once a week, we drive to a big park like Emmarenta or Delta. This is one of my happiest times of day.

09:30

I catch up on admin like emails, payments, blogging and invoices. This is also the time I package online orders and arrange my courier.

11:30

If I have errands to run (and who doesn’t have errands to run??) I do this before lunch. Fabric and trim shopping, delivery to my manufacturer, groceries…anything away from home gets done in this time slot.

13:30

Home for lunch and by this stage I’m usually quite starving. While I eat, I watch some YouTube videos – usually a Ted Talk – or listen to a podcast.

14:00

Finally my creative time! Now I get to design, plan and sew to my heart’s content.

17:00

I teach several different dance classes per week, so I usually spend some time choreographing a routine.

18:00

Final cup of tea for the day and then get ready for evening classes.

18:30-21:00

I’m either attending or teaching a dance class which is my greatest joy. Even though the classes are late, I always feel happy and energized afterwards.

22:30

I try to get into bed at 22:30 but sleep is usually still some ways off. I’ll watch some Netflix or ready a bit until it’s light’s out.
